Popular Cycling Trails in Markham

According to a UK research study, cycle commuters have a 52% lower risk of dying from heart disease and a 40% lower risk of dying from cancer due to increased physical activity. This trend is associated with commuters who cycle longer distances and therefore, active commuting is not only good for the environment but also for your health.

The City of Markham has over 400km of on-and-off road bicycle routes and trails for commuting and recreational use. This is a great way to get some fresh air, exercise, and explore the nature around you! Below are some of the most popular cycling trails in Markham:


1. Milne Dam Trail – Length: 2.1km

The Milne Dam Trail is a 2.1km loop trail located within Milne Dam Conservation Park, which takes an average of 25 min to complete. The trail surface is paved asphalt or gravel (with bridges with railings) and typically at least 2m wide. Milne Dam Conservation Park is Markham’s largest park, with 305 acres of forests, trails and picnic spots. An admission fee is required to enter the park on weekends and statutory holidays, whereas on weekdays it is free.


2. German Mills Settlers Park Loop – Length: 2.1km

The German Mills Settlers Park Loop trail is an easy cycling route that takes an average of about 30 min to complete. This scenic trail is paved asphalt (with wooden bridges with railings), gravel, or wood chips and typically at least 2m wide. With lots of greenery and wildlife, the park is also a great place to go for a walk and provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.


3. Unionville Valleylands Trail – Length: 5km

The Unionville Valleylands Trail is a 5km loop trail located in the heart of Unionville and takes an average of 1h to complete. It is a very popular, easy, and shaded trail around a serene wetland and pond, which makes it a great area to watch seasonal birds. The trail surface is paved asphalt (with boardwalk bridges with railings) and typically 1-2m wide.


4. Rouge Valley Trail – Length: 12.1km

The Rouge Valley Trail follows the Rouge River, which passes through the heart of Unionville and ends at the Milne Dam Conservation Park. It takes an average of 2h 20 min to complete and is a popular trail among residents of Markham. Since the trail is fairly flat, it is great for hiking, road biking, and trail running.
